DIGITAL DESIGN & FABRICATION STUDIO

Studio Brief

The Digital Design & Fabrication studio takes on the idea of machine processes as a design strategy. Machine processes include: Laser cuts, rasters and scores, CNC Routing, and 3D Printing. Testing different software, materials, and textures to construct these projects is also a important component of the studio.

AGGREGATED ASSAULT: Installation

Aggregated Assault is a short exercise which implies the use of 2D cutting fabrication. Aggregation is the main goal of this exercise. In other words, creating an accumulation of elements through a system of joints which ultimately will form one refined aggregation. Different aspects such as element scale, details, number of elements, geometries, and patterns are to be considered.

This execise introduces the concept of how a line system can influence machining motions. The goal of this exercise is to explore and understand different textures, patterns through controlled machining operations. The information for this exercise comes through layers generated from 2D drawings of a 3D surface. Laser cutting machine is the tool to generate the new surface.

A surface was generated and contoured in the Z direction. Reading these lines from different views provided the foundation from which the project could begin. The basis for design questioned the implications of 2D Cutting with the laser cutter and methods of pattern making through line density studies and flap opening in an effort to understand and create a process.

Being self-aware involves an individual to separate its self from the environment and those who surround it. It is the pavilion's intent to influence the user to become cognitively disassociated from the environment by operating within a dichotomy of inclusion ans alienation. Its structure intends to reflect the nature of humanity.
